Can a coffee as good as in a bar and prepared with a professional coffee machine help you prevent prostate cancer?
We will tell you about it in this article.
Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world male population.
According to data released by AIRC, 20% of diagnosed male cancers affect the prostate, with an estimated 34,800 new cases every year (data updated to 2017).
Fortunately, in recent years, the risk of mortality has lowered, thanks to better prevention and advances in science. In particular, the spread of the PSA test as a tool for early diagnosis is proving to be very useful.
Prevention, however, also goes hand in hand with some behavioral habits related to everyday life:
- sport activity;
- proper nutrition.
Regarding nutrition, we often hear about the need to start a diet based on fruit and vegetables, and the need to reduce the consumption of red meat. While little is said about the beneficial effects of coffee consumption.
Regular consumption of coffee as part of the diet has many beneficial effects, including reducing the incidence of prostate cancer. However, to take advantage of this product it is necessary to select high-quality blends of certified origin, just like any other food.
But not only.
Coffee must be prepared with suitable equipment that does not alter its organoleptic properties.
Coffee and prostate cancer: the study
According to a study carried out by the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) and published on May 17, 2011, men who regularly drink coffee (regular and decaffeinated) have a lower incidence of prostate cancer.
This study was born from the desire to investigate some of the beneficial effects of the drink that act as antioxidants, therefore reducing inflammation and regulating insulin: factors that can affect prostate cancer.
It is no coincidence that coffee consumption was also previously associated with a lower risk of getting Parkinson’s, type 2 diabetes, gallstones, liver cancer, or cirrhosis.
During the research, a sample of 47,911 US men was examined, who said they drank coffee every 4 years between 1986 and 2008. During this period, 5,035 cases of prostate cancer were reported, including 642 fatal or metastatic cases.
Interesting data that have led scholars to draw some important connections.
In particular, it was found that men who drank 6 or more cups of coffee each day had a 20% lower risk of contracting prostate cancer than people who did not drink it.
Scientists have reported that 1 to 3 cups a day is enough to reduce the chances of getting aggressive prostate cancer by nearly 1/3. Also, 4 or more cups can help delay tumor progression in sick patients.
The beneficial effects of coffee, as we have already mentioned, however, must be combined with a healthy and correct lifestyle. Smoking should be avoided, and healthy physical activity practiced.
Why drinking coffee is a beneficial habit against prostate cancer?
Specifically, how does coffee work to prevent prostate cancer?
Scientists agree that there is still a lot to work on in this regard. But, as we have mentioned, for the moment we know that among the active ingredients in coffee some are excellent for our health.
In particular, this drink is rich in antioxidants, such as flavonoids and polyphenols, both of which are very useful in preventing cell damage and relieving inflammation. Among these, two elements have the greatest ability to slow down cancer cells: kahweol acetate and cafestol.
However, these antioxidants are not present in all coffee preparations. In American coffee, for example, these elements remain trapped in the filter. This does not happen with espresso (or boiled coffee) where the compounds arrive directly in the cup.
Not all that glitters is gold. Coffee also has some side effects that cannot be underestimated, especially if you have heart problems, migraines or insomnia.
It is therefore clear that a beneficial consumption of coffee must not only be thought of ad hoc for each person, but must form part of a healthy lifestyle.
The black drink is perfect if included in a balanced and healthy diet, especially if prepared to enhance the best of the blends. An art that we know very well in Italy and that is guided, year after year, by specialized companies like ours, which are committed to bringing the taste of espresso with all its beneficial properties into homes.
Conclusion
With an origin lost in legend between Ethiopia and Yemen, coffee is undoubtedly one of the most loved and consumed beverages in the world with many different preparations: from Turkish coffee to our espresso.
It is precisely the latter that also allows benefiting from all the components that make it possible to prevent prostate cancer. Compared to some well-known variants in the world, such as the famous American coffee, the espresso is not filtered and it is particularly concentrated: this ensures that all its properties are not lost.
A conscious consumption of coffee, to be properly included in one’s diet, must however go hand in hand with the choice of quality blends and equipment so as not to give up the beneficial power of this drink. This is why more and more people are opting for a professional coffee machine to be placed in their coffee corner in the kitchen.
