With the arrival of summer, the urge to eat fresh and tasty food, such as a slice of watermelon, a bowl of ice cream, or a decidedly more ‘sinful’ tiramisu in a cup, also begins to make itself felt. After all, what could be better than lying on the sofa with the fan blaring and a delicious dessert to be enjoyed with a spoon?
The best depends on the dessert. If you love desserts in a cup, then you absolutely must try spumone coffee! Besides having your favourite drink as the main ingredient, it can be prepared in just 5 minutes and is the ideal ‘cuddle’ after a tiring day at work, as well as an easy and tasty snack for your kids.
We coffee connoisseurs have developed a real addiction for this dessert and, in this article, we reveal three different ways to prepare it, depending on how you prefer it.
Spumone Coffee: the recipe without ice
Let’s be clear: spumone al caffè is the quintessential summer dessert, which is why it has to be very cold. This, however, does not automatically oblige you to use ice: a very quick and easy way to prepare it is to use plain iced water, just taken out of the fridge or freezer. More precisely, you will then need the following ingredients:
- 160 g iced water;
- 110 g sugar;
- 20 g soluble coffee.
These are the doses designed to obtain 6 large glasses of spumone coffee, which you can sweeten to your taste. By only putting in the indicated grams of sugar, it will taste sweet but not too sweet.
Consequently, if you wish to increase its sweetness, all you have to do is increase the amount of sugar exponentially. Once you have all the ingredients, therefore, you should proceed as follows:
- pour the sugar and coffee into a bowl and mix well with a spoon;
- take the cold water from the fridge (or freezer), add it to the mixture and start whisking.
Alternatively, if you have one, you can also use the Bimby: just put all the ingredients in the mug with the butterfly and process at speed 4 for 3 minutes. To obtain a fluffy and foamy result, however, you will need no more than 5 minutes.
Then all you have to do is pour your exquisite spumone coffee into glasses and, for a “wow” effect, decorate the surface with a sprinkle of bitter cocoa and a few coffee beans. Your guests will be left speechless, enjoying a dessert that tastes great and looks great too.
Spumone Coffee: the recipe with ice
One of the countless variations of this cool recipe is to replace the ice water with real ice cubes, which you will have to chop up. That said, you will still need water as well, more precisely in the amount of 150 ml.
The rest of the ingredients remain more or less unchanged, although it depends a lot on how many doses of spumone coffee you intend to prepare. In the case of only 3, for example, you will need:
- 2 g soluble coffee;
- 5 g vanilla icing sugar;
- cocoa powder to taste (for decoration).
The first thing you need to do when preparing this variation of the recipe is to crush the ice cubes. Get a plastic food bag, pour in the ice cubes (in the quantity you prefer) and wrap it in a towel. Then crush the ice by “crushing” it with a rolling pin and pour it into a bowl. Once this is done, get a jug and fill it with the following ingredients:
- 4 – 5 tablespoons crushed ice;
- 1 teaspoon instant coffee;
- 1 teaspoon icing sugar;
- water.
Once this is done, use the blender to work the mixture well and, within a few minutes, you will again obtain a delicious spumone coffee, soft and frothy, ready to be decorated with a sprinkling of bitter cocoa and the inevitable beans, if desired.
How to prepare spumone coffee with espresso
This third and final variation we are revealing is a real treat, as it will allow you to enjoy spumone coffee together with your favourite espresso! Naturally, it is a slightly ‘heavier’ recipe but, precisely for this reason, even more delicious. To prepare it, you will need:
- 3 cups of cold espresso coffee;
- 250 ml fresh cream;
- 80 g icing sugar.
The beauty of this variation is that its success depends entirely on the preparation of the coffee. Once it is ready, you will have to let it cool in the refrigerator and then transfer it to the freezer. In the meantime, whip the cream with a whisk, adding the icing sugar until well blended.
Then pour in the coffee a little at a time until you get the frothy consistency typical of this dessert. Once you have finished working it, transfer your spumone coffee to an airtight container and leave it in the freezer for a couple of hours, turning it every half an hour with the whisk.
After this time, your cake will finally be ready to be served and, again, you can decorate it as you like, perhaps adding some accompanying biscuits!
Conclusion: how to make a good espresso for your spumone coffee
As we have already explained, this last variation of the coffee spumone is inextricably linked to the preparation of this drink, which will give the dessert its final flavour. This means that it must be prepared properly, i.e. with the most suitable means. The truth, in fact, is that if you want to drink a good coffee, you should do it with the right machine: a rule that applies even more if you have to use the espresso in question as the basic ingredient of the spumone coffee.
This is why we at Pontevecchio have specialised in lever machines that, in addition to preserving all the nutrients contained in the coffee, will guarantee you a blend with a fully satisfying taste: perfect both to be drunk on its own and to be included in a cake. So don’t wait any longer: choose the right coffee machine for you and discover a new way to enjoy espresso!
