Did you know that there is a positive correlation between coffee and headaches? Put simply, coffee is said to be able to help you beat migraines. Before you rush to throw away your aspirin, however, we strongly advise you to read this article carefully.
Since we are talking about coffee and not medicine, what we are about to give you is only advice, which is not always valid. In fact, as you will soon discover, not all headaches can be cured with cups of coffee, which, in order to work, must be taken in the correct quantity and, if possible, prepared properly.
You for one will certainly know that if you want to drink good coffee, you should do so with the right machine. To find it, go through our catalogue and discover the right coffee machine for you: the one that will allow you to prepare your own alternative remedy against headaches, without risking aggravating them. Before doing so, however, read on to find out what the connection is between coffee and headaches.
What coffee does against headaches
Dr. Vincenzo Tullo, neurologist, and headache specialist at the Humanitas Mater Domini Clinic, effectively explains the positive link between coffee and headaches. In fact, the expert affirms that the merit of this beneficial effect is to be attributed to caffeine, which, acting as a vasoconstrictor (i.e., by constricting the blood vessels), allows the pain to be alleviated in the case of migraine.
Put simply, caffeine (which, remember, is not only contained in coffee) works as an analgesic, allowing you to find some relief. That is, of course, provided you suffer from migraine. Indeed, as a well-known TV commercial says, ‘Not all headaches are the same’, which is why we would like to point out that the positive correlation between coffee and headaches has only been found in cases of migraine.
If, in fact, you suffer from a muscle tension headache, drinking coffee would not only have no positive effect, but could even increase your pain. This is because the causes of headaches include an unhealthy lifestyle, excessive stress, and poor and irregular sleep – all of which can include excessive coffee (and caffeine) consumption.
This means, simply put, that coffee can also be a double-edged sword, capable of curing your headache as well as making it increase exponentially. The question is: how can we make sure that coffee is always and only our ally?
Coffee, of course, but moderated
As with many other things, the old Latin adage ‘Cum grano salis’ applies to the connection between coffee and headaches, a saying that explicitly calls for moderation. If you suffer from a headache, in fact, the ideal would be to replace coffee with a cup of chamomile or herbal tea: a solution that would also help you consume less caffeine.
Believe it or not, drinking too much coffee can lead you to suffer from the so-called ‘coffee withdrawal headache’, a disorder that occurs when your body has developed a dependence on the drink and refuses to go without it.
Nor is headache the only symptom that occurs. In addition to it, you may also experience other unpleasant discomforts such as: drowsiness, mood swings, difficulty concentrating, nausea, muscle stiffness and rhinorrhoea, which occurs when you have a runny nose.
Avoiding this, however, is not at all complicated, as it is sufficient to limit your coffee intake to no more than two cups per day. By doing so, in fact, you should feel reasonably safe, as long as you are used to drinking coffee anyway. If, in fact, you drink it sporadically, you may risk a headache even with this minimum dose.
The problem, however, is that studies on the subject are still ongoing, which is why the results are not yet complete and definitive. This, however, should certainly not prompt you to give up your favourite beverage!
Coffee is an irreplaceable friend, helping us to face the heaviest days peacefully and giving us the right charge when we just can’t wake up: how could we live without it? And indeed, we must not. The secret, in fact, is to take it in moderation and with the right amount of awareness. But, above all, by preparing it in the right way!
