Coffee in the fridge: can you put it in or not?

The storage of coffee is a topic that often generates debate among enthusiasts. Some argue that the fridge is the ideal place to maintain freshness, while others believe that it can alter the taste.

But what is the truth? Storing coffee in the correct way is not just a matter of habit, but an essential step in preserving the aroma and flavour of one of the world’s best-loved beverages.

In this article we will discover whether leaving coffee in the fridge is really a good idea, what the main enemies of its preservation are and the most useful tips to keep it at its best, even after opening. Because if there is one thing we are certain of, it is that coffee deserves to be enjoyed in its best form.

Should coffee be stored in the fridge?

Let’s get to the point: storing coffee in the refrigerator is a common practice, but often detrimental to the quality of the drink. Both beans and ground coffee are extremely sensitive to temperature changes, and the cold of the fridge can be particularly detrimental. When coffee is taken out of the refrigerator, the temperature change can generate condensation inside the container, bringing unwanted moisture that compromises the aroma and alters the natural fats.

Furthermore, the idea of adding external elements, such as corks or apple peels, in order to preserve moisture is a false myth. These practices, in fact, risk contaminating the coffee, leading to rancidity and inevitably altering its taste.

In order to keep coffee at its best, it is important to protect it from sudden changes and temperature fluctuations, opting for more appropriate conservation methods.

We at Pontevecchio understand coffee, and we know that if you want to drink good coffee, you should do it with the right machine. Discover the right coffee machine for you. With quality coffee, proper storage will also be positively affected.

What are the enemies of coffee storage?

Keeping coffee at its best means protecting it from various factors that can compromise its aroma and quality. Here are the main elements to avoid:

  • Air: exposure to air is primarily responsible for the loss of freshness and oxidation of coffee. Every time the container is opened, oxygen comes into contact with the beans or powder, altering their natural aromas.
  • Moisture: moisture is particularly harmful, as it encourages the formation of lumps and can impair the quality of the coffee, making it less aromatic and, in the worst cases, encouraging the growth of mould.
  • Heat: high temperatures accelerate the degradation of the coffee’s natural oils, which are essential for its rich flavour. During the summer, it is essential to keep coffee in a cool environment.
  • Light: exposure to light, especially sunlight, can quickly alter the coffee’s aromas. Using opaque containers or storing it in dark places is essential to preserve its characteristics.

These factors, combined or individually, can compromise even the best-preserved coffee. Therefore, it is always preferable to choose a cool, dry and dark place to store your coffee, protecting it from the elements that alter its quality.

How best to store coffee

To keep the qualities of coffee intact, it is essential to observe certain storage rules.

The ideal temperature is between 15°C and 25°C, with a humidity level of around 50%. To achieve similar conditions at home, it is important to carefully choose both the container and the place where the coffee is stored.

  • Choose the right container: prefer an airtight dark glass or stainless-steel jar, which can protect the coffee from light and air. Avoid transparent containers, which allow the sun’s rays to alter the aromas. Also, opt for jars proportionate to the quantity of coffee, so as to minimise empty space, which can encourage oxidation.
  • Buy manageable quantities: it is better to choose smaller packs so that the product is consumed before it loses freshness. Frequently opening large packs exposes the coffee to the air, accelerating the deterioration of aromas.
  • Find the ideal place: store coffee in a closed cupboard, away from heat sources such as ovens, hobs or radiators, and away from damp areas, which could compromise quality. Protection from direct light and sudden changes in temperature is essential to ensure optimal storage.

With these measures, you can enjoy coffee that is always fresh and aromatic, enhancing the pleasure of each cup.

How many days can coffee be stored for

But how many days can coffee be kept preserved?

Of course, several elements have to be taken into account, including the form and the storage technique. However, we can say that coffee beans can maintain their original quality for a longer period than ground coffee.

Ground coffee, in fact, can last about 1-2 weeks if stored following the right method. Coffee beans, on the other hand, can keep for up to a month.

In short, coffee preservation requires you to keep in mind some useful tricks in order to prolong the original taste as much as possible. In any case, to be able to enjoy a quality coffee that stimulates the taste buds and the mind, you need a machine that works properly.

We at Pontevecchio have always been involved in the production of lever coffee machines, paying attention to every single detail. At this point, all that remains is for you to enjoy coffee in its purest and most genuine taste: choose the right lever machine for you.
