Coffee and heart: what does science say?

27 May, 2025 Espresso Coffee 5 minutes
caffè e cuore

In recent decades, the relationship between coffee consumption and heart health has been the subject of numerous studies, some of which have revealed surprising results. Although coffee is often accused of having negative effects on heart health, new scientific evidence suggests that consumed in moderation, it may actually protect us from certain heart diseases.

Several studies have proved that coffee does not increase the risk of heart disease, as initially thought, but rather, in some cases, can improve heart health.

Coffee and heart: studies on benefits

Coffee and heart risk: reduced risks

A major study conducted by the American Heart Association found that those who drink 3 to 5 cups of coffee a day have a reduced risk of developing heart disease compared to those who do not drink coffee at all. This study also revealed that regular coffee drinkers have a lower incidence of coronary heart disease, stroke and heart failure.

Another study conducted in Japan examined the effect of coffee consumption on cardiovascular mortality. The results showed that participants who drank coffee regularly had a significantly lower premature death risk from heart disease than those who did not consume it. In particular, drinking 3 cups of coffee a day was associated with a reduced death risk from cardiovascular causes.

Coffee and blood pressure: moderate but positive

One of the most debated effects of caffeine concerns its impact on blood pressure. As a matter of fact, caffeine can cause a temporary increase in blood pressure, but recent studies suggest that regular coffee drinkers tend to develop a tolerance to caffeine effects, reducing the risk of a long-lasting impact on pressure.

A study conducted by Harvard University analysed coffee consumption and the risk of hypertension. The results revealed that, although coffee drinkers could experience a short-term increase in blood pressure, moderate consumption (around 3 to 4 cups a day) was not associated with a significant increase in the risk of chronic hypertension. In fact, some studies suggest that coffee may even improve vascular function, reducing inflammation in blood vessels and supporting a healthier blood circulation.

Coffee as natural antioxidant

Coffee is one of the richest sources of antioxidants in western diet, and some studies suggest that these antioxidants may play an important role in protecting the heart. Polyphenols, in particular, are known for their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which may help prevent damage to blood vessels and reduce the risk of coronary disease.

Another study conducted in Brasil showed that regular coffee consumption, due to its antioxidants, is associated with a better vascular health, reducing the risk of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), a major cause of cardiovascular disease.

Substances in coffee that are good for the heart

Coffee is not only a drink that wakes us up in the morning, it is also a rich source of bioactive substances that provide heart-healthy benefits. Besides caffeine, which stimulates the nervous system, coffee contains:

  • Polyphenols: These compounds are powerful antioxidants, which protect blood vessels from oxidative stress and reduce inflammation, a key factor for the development of heart diseases.
  • Chlorogenic acids: Present in large quantities in coffee, these acids help reduce the absorption of carbohydrates, improving glycaemic control and thus reducing the risk of diabetes and heart disease.
  • Magnesium: Magnesium is an essential mineral for the proper functioning of the heart, and coffee can be a good source of this nutrient, which helps keep the heart rate regular.
  • Potassium: Potassium is crucial for controlling blood pressure and can help keep the cardiovascular system healthy.

Contraindications

Despite the benefits, it is important not to overdo coffee consumption, especially if you suffer from certain pre-existing conditions. Coffee, especially if consumed in large quantities, may have negative effects:

  • Hypertension: Caffeine can temporarily increase  blood pressure, so it is advisable to limit coffee intake if you suffer from hypertension.
  • Heart rhythm disorders: People with arrhythmias or heart problems should be cautious with coffee consumption, as caffeine can increase the heart rate and, in some cases, trigger episodes of fibrillation.
  • Pregnancy: Pregnant women should limit their caffeine intake, as an excess can affect the development of the foetus.

Conclusions

Several studies have shown that a moderate consumption of coffee may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, improve blood pressure and even help protect against atherosclerosis.

However, as with any type of food or beverage, it is crucial not to overdo it. Excessive coffee consumption may have negative effects, especially for those with high blood pressure or heart rhythm disorders. The key lies in moderation.

Coffee can be an excellent ally for the heart, but as with anything else, it has to be part of a balanced, healthy diet. So, enjoy your cup of coffee, but remember to always listen to your body and pay attention to your needs.

And if you really want to take care of your heart starting with taste, choose the right coffee machine for you, because every cup, if done right, can be a moment of true well-being.
